Mining itself saw an evolution as drilling machinery, mine water pumping equipment, ventilation technology and coal breaking sorting technology emerged as new and innovative means for overcoming the many obstacles of the industry.  Related industries such as iron foundries and machine shops flourished in conjunction with this expanding anthracite kingdom. The many aspects of anthracite mining's technological heritage can be best viewed at any one of the Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museums throughout the region.  Historic sites such as the Huber Coal Breaker near Wilkes- Barre and the Old Saint Nicholas Coal Breaker between Shenandoah and Mahanoy City stand as technological monuments to a bygone era.
